100 Day Project Scotland

100 Day Project Scotland

I've done it twice!

The 100 Day Project Scotland is an initiative to help creatives do a small thing each day, over 100 days.

The first time in June 2021, I set the challenge of laying out a bird on plastic, and posting the image on Instagram alongside the materials that I used - so in this case, the edge of a dinner plate and other scraps, for example.

The birds went into all sorts of projects such as splashbacks and stepping stones, as well as on slate and as hanging bird mosaics.

I didn't finished the 100 days until February 2023! My last bird was made from a mug which said "Makers Gonna Make" on it, which I thought was highly appropriate.  It was used in my sculptural project in Tunisia.

In 2024, I decided to challenge myself to something that I could see being completed in the 100 days.  In any mosaic studio, there are boxes of shards of broken plates or tiles just waiting for the right project, and so this was that day!

Each flower is made from broken crockery with a glass nugget and either wine botte or fragments of stained glass make up the stem and leaves.  These are set on lightweight recycled board (the odd shapes left over from when I cut out circles etc), and surrounded by either stained glass (cut up pieces given to me by a local lady who decided that mosaics were not for her) or vitreous glass tile pieces.

The mosaics are grouted in small batches using leftover grout, giving each one a subtly distinct finish.

Throughout the 100 days, I documented the process on Instagram — from the source materials (a favourite mug, a chipped plate, or a found ceramic shard) to the finished flower. You can find the full journey saved as a “highlight” on my Instagram profile.

The original intention was to mount all of them onto a board, for an exhibition, which I never got around to doing.  So I made them as little mini mosaics available to buy.  The reverse side is now hand-painted with durable cement paint and fitted with a D-ring, ready to hang.  You can see what I have added to my site here, and there are some out and about in other galleries and exhibitions from time to time.

The big question :  What should I do next for the next 100 Days Project Scotland?
