Pictures, Mirrors, Exhibition Pieces
A selection of more complex mosaic work; bespoke pieces as a commission, or for exhibitions and galleries, or for my own personal fun!
All the mosaics use primarily recycled materials, including pre-loved crockery and left-over tiles, either reusing a picture frame or on board.
If you see a mosaic which inspires you but is not the required dimensions or colour scheme please get in touch for a quote for a mosaic to suit your theme. I can even include crockery or items from your own kitchen to make it even more special.
I have many more mosaics in galleries which are not shown here, and the mosaics can look so different in real life, so visit my About page to find where I am showing my works.
Exhibition Pieces

Made for British Association of Modern Mosaic Exhibition (scotland)
Abbotsford House
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of Sir Walter Scott, with my piece Abbotsford House, made for an exhibition at the Scott Gallery in Hawick.
Abbotsford House was created from his vision in the Scots Baronial style, which was in fashion at the time, with lots of stepped gables and chimney pots. He also designed the layout of the gardens with lots of 'rooms'.
Whilst the house and garden structure is depicting it as it currently is, the flowerbeds are from my imagination!

In the garden with friends exhibition
Tree of Life Persian Carpet
The design combines my interpretation of several elements of traditional Persian rugs, however, having to balance tradition with finding the right materials for the mosaic meant a bit of 'artistic licence' in its execution.
Materials including mirror glass, glass tiles (left over from a bathroom job), ceramic dishes, vintage ceramic tile, and ball.
102cm x 80cm

Made for British Association of Modern Mosaic Exhibition 2023
Southern Birds
Inspired by Johann Bayer's illustration of the Southern Birds constellation in his Uranometria, a star atlas, published in 1603. The constellation comprises of four bird panels: Tucana (toucan), Grus (crane), Phoenix and Pavo (peacock). The fifth title panel, alongside the whole presentation of the mosaics, references the John Clayton mosaics in Chester Cathedral.
Materials: reclaimed ceramics, including 1970's Midwinter Caprice and J&G Meakin's Impact cups and saucers. Handmade MDF frame.

Light Catching Floral Panel
A vibrant floral panel made from upcycled bone china and glass. I have chosen crockery which has a lot of gilt detailing which is visible in the petals, so catching the light in different ways.
Currently on display in the Atholl Gallery, Dunkeld

Daisies & Dragonflies Mirror
A mirror made from a variety of recycled materials: the flowers are made from bone china plates, the centre of the flowers are scraps of glass fused into nuggets and are always happy accidents, the stems, leaves and grass are from stained glass off-cuts. For the dragonflies, they are more fused glass nuggets with reclaimed mirror for the wings. The sky is made of broken car window, with a sweet wrapper collage underneath.

Through the Garden Gate
I loved the concept of a path meandering through a meadow to a garden gate with a field beyond. Made from a combination of pre-loved broken china; vintage tile and . wine bottle glass.
